“알 수 없는 김정은, 더 알 수 없는 트럼프” – 가게 손님 한 분이 내게 던진 말이다. 연일 이어지는 한반도 뉴스들을 보다가 가게 손님들에게 평화를 기원한다는 뜻으로 편지를 보냈었다. 손님 하나가 제법 긴 답을 보내왔다. 내 나이 또래인데, 전력공급회사의 중견 간부로 있다가 최근에 은퇴한 이이다. 우리 동네에서 볼 수 있는 전형적인 백인 중산층 신중년이라고 할 수 있겠다. 생각의 옳고 그름을 떠나 그의 경험과 생각을 이 곳에 오는 이들과 함께 한다. 
너의 희망이 이루어지기를 바라지만, 내 생각엔 만일 북한 지도자가 진로를 바꾸지 않는다면, 향후 몇 년 내에 한반도에서 (아마 다른 곳에서도) 죽음과 파멸의 시기가 올 가능성이 점차 커지는 것 같다. 만일 그(김정은)가 사람들의 거주지역 내에 핵폭탄을 폭발 시킨다면, 내가 어렸을 때 지녔었던 공포를 수많은 사람들이 가지게 될 것이다. 나는 초등학교 시절의 핵폭탄 대비 훈련을 여전히 기억한다. 기본적으로 그 훈련은 경보가 울리거나 버섯구름이 보이면, 책상 밑으로 기어들어가는 것이었다. 물론, 일단 모두가 얼굴을 감싼 채 책상 밑에 들어가 있으면, 그 다음에 무슨 일이 일어날지 혹은 우리가 어떻게 살아남을 지에 대해서는 아무도 알지 못했다. 핵폭탄이 실제로 폭발하면, 맨하탄 프로젝트에 참여한 정부 과학자들과 그 프로젝트를 관장하고 히로시마와 나가사키 영상물을 직접 본 군사지도자들만이 상황이 얼마나 참혹할지를 인식할 뿐이었다. 책상 밑으로 기어들어 가는 것으로는 아무도 살아남지 못할 것이다.
그래서, 나는 너의 희망에 한 마디 덧붙인다. — 나는 평양의 미치광이가 자신이 택하고 있는 진로가 자기 나라의 주요 하부구조 상당 부분과 자신의 국민 (자신의 강제노역자들) 다수를 불타버리게 만들 가능성이 아주 높게 만든다는 것을 깨닫게 되기를 바란다. 일본과 남한의 수많은 사람들 또한 고통과 손실을 겪게 되고, 생활양식으로 알고 있는 것들이 변하게 되거나, 혹은 잃게 될 것이다. 북반구의 사람들과 모든 생명체들이 식량공급 영향, 질병, 불필요한 고통 등의 측면에서 수십년 동안 영향을 받게 될 것이다. 그것이 북한의 미래를 책임지는 사람에게 별로 중요한 것이 아니라면, 그는 세계에서 위대한 명예와 중요성을 이룩한 사람이기 보다는 자신의 나라를 파멸시킨 인물로 기억될 것이다.
내 조상의 대다수는 네델란드에서 왔으며, 나머지는 아일랜드와 스코틀랜드 거의 반반이었는데, 우리의 마지막 이민 가족은 1884년에 도착했다. 미국 거주 나의 가족은 열 한 세대에 걸쳐 살았거나 살고 있으며, 오랜 기간에 걸쳐 고국을 방문한 적이 없었고, 또한 그들 국가들이 이후 379년에 걸쳐 상당히 변했기 때문에, 우리가 떠나기 전 고국이 어떠했는지에 대한 세세한 지식을 갖고 있지 않다. 하지만, 내가 알게 된 것은, 당신이나 나나 ‘어디에서 왔는지’는 정말로 중요하지 않으며, 거의 모든 인간들은 같은 것들을 – 음식, 평안, 안정, 선택한 분야에서의 성공, 우리 지역사회에서 승인, 그리고 자녀들이 번창할 수 있는 좋은 기회 – 원한다는 것이다. 한국인들 역시 다른 사람들과 다르지 않겠지만, 세계 많은 나라에서는 그러한 모든 행복의 수단을 성취할 가능성이 이 나라에서 보다 훨씬 낮다. 3차 세계대전은 인류의 상당 부분뿐 아니라 지구상의 수많은 생명체들도 파멸시킬 수 있다. 대규모의 전쟁은 피해야 하겠지만, 그 못지 않게 두렵다. 세번째 전쟁에는 모두가 잃게 될 것이다.
I hope your wish comes true, but my sense is that it is becoming increasingly likely that there will be a period of death & destruction on the Korean peninsula (and possibly elsewhere) in the next few years if the leader of North Korea doesn’t change course. If he detonates a nuclear device within range of human habitation, it will bring home the fears that I grew up within as a small child to very many people. I still remember doing the atomic bomb preparation drills in elementary school, which essentially was crawling under our desks when the alarm sounded or a mushroom cloud was seen. Of course, once we were all under our desks with our faces covered, nobody had an answer for what would happen next and how we would stay alive. If a bomb actually went off, only government scientists in the Manhattan Project and military leaders who had overseen that program and viewed the films of Hiroshima and Nagasaki realized just how bad things might become. Crawling under a desk wouldn’t have saved anybody.
So I would add another line to your hope — I hope that maniac in Pyongyang comes to realize that the path he is taking will most likely incinerate much of the critical infrastructure of his country and many of its people (his forced labor). Many people in Japan and South Korea will also suffer pain and loss, changing or losing what they know of a way of life. The people and all other living things in the northern hemisphere will be affected for decades in terms of food supply impacts, sickness, and unnecessary suffering. IF that is of no importance to the person who is responsible for the future of North Korea, then he will be remembered as the man who destroyed his country rather than someone who achieved great honor and importance in the world.
A majority of my ancestors came from the Netherlands, and the rest are fairly evenly split between Ireland and Scotland, with the last our our immigrant family arriving in 1884. Eleven generations have lived or are living here in my family of American residents, and we have lost any detailed knowledge of what our homelands were like before we left simply because we have never been back for extended visits and those countries have changed quite a bit in the subsequent 379 years. But I have learned that it doesn’t really matter where you or I ‘come from’, nearly all of humanity want the same things: a supply of food, comfort, stability, success at our chosen endeavors, acceptance in our community, and good opportunity for our children to thrive. Koreans are no different than anyone else, but in many of the countries of the world the chance of achieving all those measures of happiness is much slimmer than in this country. A third world war could ruin that for not only a large portion of humanity but also many other species on this planet. That scale of war needs to be avoided, but I fear it may not be. Everyone will lose in the third one.
