가게 손님들과 정치 이야기나 종교 이야기를 나누는 일은 장사하는 사람들에게 전혀 도움이 되지 않는 일일겝니다. 세상 어디서건 마찬가지일 것입니다.
그걸 잘 아는 제가 손님들에게 이제껏 한번도 해보지 않았던 정치 이야기(?… 딱 정치 이야기랄 수는 없지만, 이즈음 내가 살고 있는 트럼프 치하의 미국이 한국과 유사한지라 )로 오늘 아침에 편지를 띄워 보았답니다.
행여 약간의 손해를 보더라도 손님들이 어떻게 반응하는지를 알고 싶었기 때문이랍니다. 현재 이메일 응답만으로는 긍정적 느낌의 답이 대세랍니다. 새로 맞는 한 주, 제 가게 손님들과 나눌 한국상황에 대한 응답들이 자못 궁금하답니다.
지난 주 한국인들 사이에서 가장 많이 회자된 이야기는 한국대통령 탄핵에 대한 것이었답니다.
저는 한국을 떠나 미국에 이민온지도 벌써 30년이 넘어가니 사실 오늘날 한국 상황에 대해 아는 것은 별로 없답니다. 그리고 당신도 알다시피 세탁소에서 많은 시간을 보내고 있는 제게 한국의 정치상황은 아무런 상관이 없답니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 대통령이 탄핵되었다는 뉴스에 관심을 안가질 수가 없었답니다.
저는 이번에 탄핵된 한국대통령의 아버지가 대통령이었던 시절에 한국에서 살았답니다. 그 이름이 박정희였는데 그가 대통령으로 있었을 때, 저는 초, 중, 고등학교를 비롯해 대학교를 다녔고 군대도 다녀왔답니다. 그가 자그마치 18년 동안이나 통치자였기 때문이랍니다.
제가 이십대 나이였던 그 때에 겪었던 정말 웃지못할 일들이 많았답니다. 일테면 남자는 머리를 길게 기르지를 못하고, 여자는 짧은 치마를 입으면 안되는 것들이었답니다. 제가 스무살 무렵의 일이었는데 거리에서 머리를 길게 기른 젊은이들을 경찰들이 잡아 머리를 가위로 짧게 짤라버리고, 짧은 스커트를 입은 젊은 여자들을 경찰들이 붙잡아 치마를 가위로 자르는 일도 있었답니다. 이번에 탄핵된 한국대통령의 아버지가 대통령이었던 시절에 있었던 일이었지요.
그 무렵에 제가 읽었던 책 가운데 헨리 데이빗 소로우(Henry David Thoreau)의 ‘시민불복종(Civil Disobedience)’이 있었는데, 당시 한국에서는 금서로 지정되어 있었답니다. 그 책에 있는 말 들 가운데 하나이지요.
<우리는 먼저 인간이어야 하고, 그 다음에 국민이어야 한다. 법에 대한 존경심보다는 먼저 정의에 대한 존경심을 기르는 것이 바람직하다. 내가 떠맡을 권리가 있는 유일한 의무는, 어는 때든 내가 옳다고 생각하는 바를 행하는 것이다. – 중략- 나는 오로지 이 세상을 살기 좋은 곳으로 만들기 위해 여기 온 것이 아니라 좋건 나쁘건 여기서 살려고 온 것이다.>
한국뉴스를 보면서 떠올린 오래 전에 읽었던 헨리 데이빗 소로우의 말이랍니다.
좋고 나쁘건 여기 살려고 온 내가, 이 세상을 살기 좋은 곳으로 만들기 위한 아주 작은 일 하나라도 할 수만 있다면 삶에 큰 뜻이 있지 않을까요?
사람들이 아니라 사람, 사람 하나하나가 모두 귀하여 여겨지는 세상이 되었으면 하는 바램으로…

It was the impeachment of the Korean president that became a much-talked-about issue among Korean people last week.
As I came to America over 30 years ago, I cannot say that I know well about the situation in Korea at the present day. And, as you may know, I’ve been busy at the cleaners so that the political situation in Korea has not attracted my attention particularly. However, I cannot but pay attention to the news about the impeachment of the president of Korea.
I lived in Korea during the reign of the impeached Korean president’s father. He is President Park Chung-hee. While he was the president of Korea, I went through the elementary, middle, high school and the university. I even completed my military duties, while he was the president of Korea. All these were possible because his reign lasted for no less than 18 years.
When I was in my twenties, many things about which I could not laugh happened in Korea. For example, they restricted men from having long hair and women from wearing a short skirt. Around the time when I was about twenty years old, the policemen caught young men with long hair and cut their hair short with scissors. They also caught young women with a short skirt and cut the skirt. This kind of unthinkable things had happened when the father of the president who was impeached the other day had been the president of Korea.
One of the books which I read in those days was “Civil Disobedience” by Henry David Thoreau, which was banned in Korea at that time. The following is from the book:
We should be men first, and subjects afterward. It is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right. The only obligation which I have a right to assume is to do at any time what I think right… I came into this world, not chiefly to make this a good place to live in, but to live in it, be it good or bad.
Those words came to my mind, while I was watching news about Korea.
If we can do something, however small it may be, “to make this world a good place to live in, be it good or bad,” wouldn’t it be meaningful in life?
I hope that this world will become one in which every single individual as oneself, instead of the mass, is valued and respected.
