<어느새 이월 첫 주일. 생각 하나, 가게 손님들과 나누다>
2020년 새해가 시작된 것이 엊그제 같은데 어느새 2월이 되었습니다. 저는 하루하루 그저 바쁘기도 하고, 이런 저런 일들이 많아 새해 계획이랄 것도 없이 일월 한 달을 보냈답니다.
모처럼 엊저녁에 조금은 느긋한 마음으로 지난 한 해와 올 한 해에 대한 생각도 해보고, 제가 관심을 갖고 있는 뉴스들도 찾아 보는 시간을 가졌답니다.
그러다 문득 떠오른 재미있는 생각 하나 당신과 함께 나눕니다.
제 세탁소에 들어오는 세탁물 중 가장 많은 숫자의 단일 품목으로는 남성 비지니스 셔츠가 단연 으뜸입니다.
그런데 손님마다 맡기는 셔츠의 모습들이 다르답니다. 남성 비지니스 셔츠에 달린 단추들은 보통 9개에서 15개 정도인데 가장 일반적인 셔츠에는 11-12개 정도의 단추들이 있답니다.
어떤 손님들은 셔츠에 달린 단추들을 모두 잘 채워서 가지고 오시기도 하고 어떤 이들은 단추들을 모두 풀어서 맡기시기도 합니다. 또 어떤 분들은 셔츠 앞 단추 맨 위에 한 두개를 푼 뒤 셔츠를 완전히 뒤집어서 가지고 오시는 분도 계시고, 셔츠 단추를 모두 다 채운 뒤 새 것처럼 잘 접어서 맡기시는 분도 계십니다.
제 입장에서는 단추를 모두 풀어서 가지고 오시는 분이 제일 반갑답니다. 왜냐하면 셔츠를 다릴 때 반드시 단추가 다 풀린 상태라야 하기 때문이지요. 제가 셔츠를 빨기 전에 반드시 해야 하는 일이 셔츠의 모든 단추를 푸는 일이랍니다. 그러니 만일 셔츠 단추를 모두 채운 셔츠 10장을 세탁하기 위해서는 세탁 전에 단추 100개 이상을 풀어야 하는 것이지요.
그런데 엊저녁에 문득 떠오른 재미있는 생각이란 30년 넘게 세탁소를 해 오면서, 모든 손님들이 셔츠 단추를 모두 풀어서 셔츠를 맡긴 날이 단 하루도 없듯이, 모든 손님들이 모든 셔츠 단추를 다 채워서 셔츠를 맡긴 날 역시 단 하루도 없었다는 사실이랍니다.
대다수의 손님들은 그저 제가 일에 지치지 않을 정도로 목 단추 두 개, 소매 단추 두 개 정도를 제외하곤 다 풀어서 맡기신답니다. 지난 30년 거의 그랬던 것 같습니다.
그리고 이어진 생각이랍니다. 사는 게 다 그런게 아닐까 하는 것이었답니다. 내가 편하고 좋은 쪽 일들이나, 내가 하기 싫고 불편한 일들이나 모두 늘 일어날 수 밖에 없지만, 그런 일들이 일어나는 확율 보다는 대개 내가 마주치는 일들이란 그저 불평도 만족도 없는 그저 그런 일상들의 연속이 아닐까하는 생각 말입니다.
그런데 머리 속에 남거나 오래 기억하는 일들이란 아주 좋은 일이나 아주 나쁜 기억들이 아닐까 하는 생각이었지요.
그 끝에 다다른 생각이랍니다. 그저 평범한 하루 하루 일상에 감사하자는 것이지요. 그렇게 세워 본 올 한 해 제 계획이랍니다.

It seems like the Year 2020 started just a few days ago, but it is already February. I was simply busy every day and I had to deal with one thing and another. So I spent January without making New Year’s resolutions.
After a while, the other evening, I thought about the past year and this year with a somewhat relaxed mind and even looked for the news in which I was interested.
Then, one interesting thought came across my mind. I’d like to share it with you.
Among the items which were brought into my cleaners, a men’s business shirt is decisively at the top in terms of quantities.
But, the ways in which customers drop them off are various. The men’s business shirt has buttons from 9 to 15, and typically about 11 or 12 buttons.
Some customers bring shirts with all the buttons fastened and some do so completely unbuttoned. Some others bring shirts which are inside out with only one or two front top buttons unfastened. Some fasten all the buttons, fold them well like brand new shirts and drop them off for cleaning.
Those who undo all the buttons are my favorite customers. That’s because buttons must be unfastened in order to press shirts. The first thing that I should do before washing shirts is to undo all the buttons. So, if I process 10 shirts of which all the buttons are fastened, I should have to undo more than 100 buttons.
The interesting thought which had flashed across my mind the other day was that there had never been a day in which all the shirts were unbuttoned and also not a single day in which all the buttons of the shirts were fastened for my thirty-year-long cleaners’ life.
Most customers brought unbuttoned shirts except a few buttons on collars and sleeves, but not enough to make me too tired. It seems that it has been pretty much like that for the past 30 years.
It led me to an idea that life might be like that, too. Though we could face, anytime in life, the things which we feel good and comfortable in doing or the pesky things which we don’t like to do, the things that happen to us most of the time might be a series of simple everyday life events, without complaint or satisfaction.
However, the things which stayed long in our minds and memories might be ones which were extremely good or really bad. Just my thought.
It ultimately led me to the end. I should feel gratitude for simple everyday life. That became my New Year’s resolution.
