이민 와서 어쩌다 시작하게 된 세탁소 주인 노릇이 어언 30여년이다. 한 땐 네 곳의 세탁소와 픽업 루트까지 이 업으로 남 못지 않게 바빳었다. 세탁소를 하기 싫어 한 눈을 팔다 폭삭한 적도 있었다. 나름 미 전역 이 업계에서 내 이름 석자를 기억해 주는 이들도 몇몇은 된다.
누구에게나 그 때가 찾아오듯 일이 좀 버겁다는 생각이 들 무렵에 이르러 일을 줄였다. 한참 때에 비하면 이즈음 세탁소 일은 그저 놀고 쉬는 셈이다.
바램이 있다면 아내 덕에 30여년 지켜온 이 세탁소에서 일할 수 있는 날까지 하루 해를 보내는 것이다.
그 바램에 금이 가기 시작한 일이 생긴 것은 올 초였다. 내 세탁소가 있는 샤핑센터의 건물주는 삼대 세습을 받은 젊은 친구다. 그의 할아버지와 계약을 맺고 들어 가 그의 아버지를 거쳐 젊은 새 주인에 이르기까지 이어온 가게란 많은 입주자들 가운데 Acme나 Kmart 등 큰 체인점들을 제외하면 내 세탁소가 유일하다.
젊다는 것은 꿈이 있다는 뜻. 젊은 주인이 몇 년 동안 꿈꾸어 온 샤핑센터 리모델링 계획안이 시市 의 승인을 받은 게 올 초였다. 그 사이 젊은 주인과 두 차례 만나 그의 계획을 듣고 내 세탁소 임대 연장에 대한 이야기를 나누었었다. 문제는 그의 계획안에 따르면 내 세탁소 자리가 없어지는 것이었다.
아직 잔여 임대 기간이 넉넉하고 계획안이 실행 되려면 아직 많은 시간들이 남아있기에 좀 느긋했었다. 그런데 아직 계약기간이 몇 년 남아 있다던 Kmart가 다음 달인 10월에 폐업한다는 발표가 몇 주 전에 있자 젊은 주인의 리모델링 실행이 급물살을 탓다.
젊은 주인은 올 11월 까지 새로 꾸미는 건물로 이전할 것을 권유해 왔다. 말이 좋아 권유이지 통보였다. 하여 이런 저런 생각이 많은 이즈음이다. ‘십 년 만 젊었으면 일 한번 벌려 볼텐데…’ 와 ‘나이가 십 년 만 더 들었다면 그냥 손 털고 말텐데… ‘그 사이에서 어중간한 생각들이 수없이 오고간다.
하여 우선 내 가게 손님들에게 저간의 사정을 설명하는 편지를 띄운 것은 지난 일요일이었다. 지난 한 주간 내 세탁소를 드나든 많은 손님들이 ‘걱정 말라’며 해 준 말에 몇 년은 젊어졌다. 그들이 해 준 말이다. ‘너희 부부가 어디로 가던 나는 쫓아 간다.’
짧은 메세지를 보낸 이들도 많았다. 일테면…

그리고 손님들에게 보냈던 편지.
최근에 저희 세탁소에 오셨던 분들은 Kmart에 내 건 “Store Closing”라는 커다란 사인판을 보셨을 것입니다.
Kmart가 문닫다는 소식에 여러 손님들이 저희 부부에게 똑같은 질문을 던지십니다. “너희는 어떻게 되는거니?” 하는 물음입니다. 사실 Kmart가 갑자기 문을 닫는다는 소식에 저희 부부도 조금 놀랐었답니다. 한 두어 달 전에 샤핑센터 건물주를 만났을 때만 하여도 Kmart 임대계약이 2년 넘게 남아 있음으로 그 때까진 영업을 할 것이라는 이야기를 들었었기 때문이랍니다. Kmart의 갑작스런 폐업은 그 본사의 결정인 듯 합니다.
이제 제 세탁소가 있는 쪽 건물에는 Pep Boys와 저희 K&L Cleaners만 남게 되었습니다. 어쩌면 손님들의 물음은 아주 당연한 일인 듯합니다.
30여년 영업을 해 온 이 자리에서 제가 일을 그만 둘 때까지 이 세탁소를 계속 할 수 있었으면 하는 제 소망은 이루어 지지 않을 것 같습니다.
올 들어 두차례 landlord를 만났었답니다. 그가 최근에 하고 있는 샤핑센터 리모델링에 대한 계획을 듣고 향후 제 세탁소 리스 연장에 대한 일을 논의하고자 한 일입니다.
그는 샤핑센터 리모델링에 대한 그의 꿈을 담은 청사진을 저희들에게 보여 주며 이렇게 권유했답니다. “지금 너희 세탁소가 있는 자리는 녹지로 변경될 것이다. 그러니 현재 ACME가 있는 쪽 건물로 이전했으면 한다. 다만 현재 남아 있는 리스 기간인 내년 8월 말 까지 현재 장소에서 영업을 할 수 있지만 가급적 올 11월 까지는 결정을 내려 주길 바란다.” 물론 새로운 계약조건 등 몇 가지 부대 조항들에 대한 설명도 있었지요.
솔직히 우리 부부는 이즈음 어떤 결정이 최선의 것인지 많은 고민을 하고 있답니다. Acme 쪽으로 옮길지? 가까운 인근에 다른 장소로 이전을 해야 할지? 이전 시기는 언제가 가장 좋을지? 등등의 고민이지요.
그런 고민들 가운데서 아주 확실하게 결정하고 최선을 다하려고 하는 것들이 몇 가지 있답니다. 무엇보다 우선은 걱정스런 고민은 하지 말자는 것입니다. 우리 부부가 최종에 어떤 선택을 하던 그 환경에서 최선을 다해보자는 다짐이랍니다. 두 번 째는 현재 제 가게 손님들이 가장 편안하고 만족할 선택을 해 보자는 것이고, 그럼으로 현재에 충실하자는 생각이랍니다. 마지막으로는 우리 부부가 일 할 수 있을 때까지 다시 옮기지 않을 곳이었으면 하는 바램인데 이건 소망일 수 밖에 없는 것이 우리들의 의지와는 관계없이 일어날 수도 있겠기에 기도의 영역으로 넘기는 것이랍니다.
바램이 있고 기도할 것이 있는 한, 삶은 살만한 것이기도 하고 행복을 느낄만한 여지가 있는 것 아닐까요?

Some of you who came to the cleaners recently might have seen the big sign, “Store Closing,” at K-mart.
Because of the news of K-mart closing, many customers asked the same question to my wife and me: “How about you? What will happen to you?” In fact, my wife and I were somewhat surprised at the news, too. That’s because the landlord of the shopping center told us that K-mart would continue business until the end of the lease which would end over two years later, when we met him about a couple of months ago. It seems to me that the sudden closure of the K-mart was the headquarters’ decision.
Soon, on my side, just Pep Boys and K&L Cleaners will be left. So my customers’ question is only natural.
I don’t think that my hope, which is to run the cleaners until I retire at the same spot as the past almost 30 years, will be realized.
This year, I met the landlord twice to hear about the remodeling plan of the shopping center and to discuss the extension of my lease.
The landlord showed us the blueprint which reflects his dream of remodeling and told us: “The area where your cleaners is located will become a green area. So I want to suggest that you move to a space on the Acme side. Though you can continue your business at the current place until the end of the lease term, August, 2019, I ask you to make a decision by November, if possible.” Of course, he also told us new lease conditions and some other strings attached.
Frankly, my wife and I have been scratching our heads over what will be the best decision. Should we move to the Acme side? How about finding a new place nearby and moving there? If we move, when will be the best time?
While we are worrying about the near future, my wife and I set up three basic principles. First of all, instead of falling into worrying itself, we made a resolution that we’ll do our best, whatever the environment will be after our final decision. Second, the decision should be the one which will make our current customers feel most comfortable and satisfied. The third one is our wish that we will not move again until my wife and I cannot work anymore. But, unfortunately, it will be beyond our control, so we will move it to the prayer territory.
If we have dreams and wishes and something to pray for, life may be worthy of living and have room for feeling happy. Don’t you think so?
