어제 제 이메일함에 들어온 편지 한통의 내용입니다.
“델라웨어 대학교 은퇴교수인 내가 이즈음 하고 있는 일 가운데 하나는 뉴왁시에 있는 헬렌 그라함 암센터에서 환자와 간병인들에게 글쓰기 교실을 여는 일이다. 물론 자원봉사이고 이 교실은 누구에게나 열려있고 공짜이다. 오늘 네가 보낸 이메일 편지 내용은 내가 오는 2월 13일에 열리는 글쓰기 교실의 주제와 딱 맞는 것이다. 그래서 네 편지를 그날 참석하는 사람들과 네 편지를 함께 나누려고 하는데 괜찮겠니? …….”라는 것이었습니다.
I’m a retired professor from the University of Delaware, and I offer a writing program for patients and caregivers at the Helen Graham Cancer Center in Newark. I do it as a volunteer, and it’s free of charge and open to all. The post you sent out today fits perfectly with the topic of our next writing workshop, on February 13. Would it be all right with you if I print out copies to give to the patients and caregivers who attend that session? We usually have 12-18 people present. Of course I’ll include the contact information so that they can sign up for your weekly posts if they wish.

이 편지를 받은 저는 당연히 제 세탁소 손님인 Joan DelFattore님께 답을 드렸답니다.
“저로서는 그저 영광일 뿐”이라고요.
제가 보냈던 편지 내용이란 사실 별거 아니었답니다. 내 마음으로 다스릴 줄 아는 하루를 보냈으면 하는 마음을 전한 것이었지요. 그런 잠시의 제 생각 하나가 누군가에게 정말 순간일지라도 편안한 느낌으로 다가갈 수 있다면 제게 참 좋은 일이지요.
제가 보냈던 편지 내용이랍니다.
며칠 전에 휴대전화 가게에 들릴 일이 있었답니다. 그날 대기 의자에 앉아 “참 세상 많이 바뀌었다.”는 생각을 해 보았답니다. 십 수년 전만해도 지금과 같은 휴대전화 가게 같은 매장은 볼 수도 없었을 뿐더러 그런 비즈니스를 생각하는 사람들도 별로 없었을 것입니다. 그런 생각을 이어가다보니 십 수년 동안 새로 생겨 호황인 업종들과 잘 나가다가 없어지거나 쇠퇴한 업종들을 꼽아보게 되었답니다. 그 생각의 끝은 역시 “세상 참 많이 바뀌었다.”이었답니다.
제 업인 세탁업도 마찬가지랍니다. 여러가지 면에서 참 많이 바뀌었답니다.
개인용 컴퓨터, 인터넷 및 정보 통신 기술 등으로 특징지어지는 이른바 제3차 산업혁명의 결과들일 것입니다. 어려운 것은 제가 잘 모르고요, 사람사는 모습들이 빠르게 바뀌어 가고 있다는 말일 것입니다.
그런데 지금은 제4차 산업혁명의 시대라고들 한답니다. 솔직히 저는 그런 변화에 대해 잘 모른답니다. 다만 앞으로의 세상은 더욱 더 빠르게 바뀌어 갈 것이고, 사람들이 먹고 사는 직업의 유형들도 빠른 주기로 바뀌어 갈 것이라는 생각은 갖고 있답니다.
그런 생각을 이어가다보면 제 아이들 세대들은 우리 세대보다 더 어려운 세상을 사는 것은 아닐까? 하는 염려가 들기도 한답니다.
세상이 빠르게 변화하는데 제가 할 수 일은 아무 것도 없답니다.
다만 그날 휴대전화 가게에서 이렇게 빠르게 변화하는 세상에서 내가 할 수 있는 일 한가지를 생각해 낸 것이 있답니다.
조금은 느리게 살자는 것이랍니다.
세상이 빠르게 변하는 일에 제가 할 수 있는 것은 없지만, 내 삶을 느리게 천천히 여유있게 사는 것이야 내 맘대로 할 수 있는 일이니까요.
자! 새로 시작하는 한 주간 여유롭고 넉넉한 시간들이 되시길 빕니다.
당신의 세탁소에서
A few days ago, I had to go to a cell phone store. On that day, while I was sitting on the chair and waiting, I got it into my head that the world had really changed a lot. Just a decade or so ago, I did not see businesses such as cell phone stores. I don’t think that anybody would have thought about that kind of business. Following such a train of thoughts, I started to think about newly-born and booming businesses and those once booming, but now declining businesses during the past decade or so. Expectedly, the thoughts ended in the conclusion: the world has really changed a lot.
So has the dry-cleaning business, which I have been doing. It has changed a lot in many respects.
Those changes may be the outcome of the third industrial revolution which can be characterized by personal computers, the internet and information/communication technologies. Though I don’t have expert knowledge about it, I think what it tells us is that the way of our lives has been changing rapidly.
Then, it is said that now we are living in the era of the fourth industrial revolution. Frankly, I don’t have any idea about that. But, I think that in the future, the world will change at an even faster pace and the rise and fall of businesses will change at a shorter cycle.
Following the train of this kind of thoughts, I started to wonder whether our children’s generation might confront a world which might be even harder to cope with than the one that we do.
Though the world is changing rapidly, I cannot do anything about that.
However, at the cell phone store the other day, I got an idea of one thing which I could do in the rapidly changing world.
It was to live in a little bit slower way.
Though I cannot do anything about rapid changes in the world, I can have my own way to decide how to live. To live my life in a slower and more leisurely way is totally up to me.
