눈치우다 보내는 이월을 배웅하고 설렘으로 맞는 삼월을 생각하며 손님들에게 일요일 아침편지를 띄우다.
응달에는 아직 녹지않은 잔설(殘雪)들이 남아 있지만 이제 삼월입니다. 머지않아 파릇한 새 생명들이 움을 트는 봄을 맞는 삼월입니다.
해마다 이 맘 때쯤 떠올려보는 헨리 데이빗 소로우의 말이지요. <초봄에는 가난한 사람들의 집 앞에 눈도 녹는다. 그대가 평온한 마음을 가지기만 한다면, 거기서도 궁전에서처럼 즐겁고 만족스런 삶을 살 수 있으리라.>
어제 주보건국(The Delaware Division of Public Health)에서 보낸 이메일 한 통을 받았답니다. 코로나 바이러스 백신 접종에 대한 안내 였습니다. 제가 백신 접종 신청을 하였지만 아직도 순서를 기다리고 있을 수 밖에 없는 상황에 대한 자세한 설명이었습니다.
현재 65세 이상 접종 신청자 수는 123,000명이고 현재 접종을 마친 사람들 수는 51,000명 정도랍니다. 매주 조금씩 접종자 수를 늘리고는 있으나, 절대적으로 공급물량이 모자라고, 이차 접종과도 맞물려 원래 계획보다 모든 순서들이 늦어지고 있다는 것이었습니다.
제 접종 순서가 늦어지는 이유들 가운데 가장 고개를 끄덕이며 동의한 부분이랍니다. ‘그 이유 가운데 하나는 당신보다 COVID 상황에 취약한 당신의 이웃들과 벗들을 위해…(서라고 이해해 주십시요.)’
그러다 뒤적여 본 지낸 해 이 맘 때에 쓴 제 일기장이랍니다. 작년 이 맘 때만 하여도 우리 주변에 마스크를 쓰고 다니는 사람이 이상하게 보일 정도로 바이러스가 아직 우리들 곁에 가까이 있다는 것을 모르고 살 때였답니다.
그 무렵 제가 읽고 있던 책 가운데 Yuval Noah Harari가 쓴 ’21세기를 위한 21가지 제언’이라는책에 서 본 글 한 줄을 제 일기장에 남겨 놓았답니다.
<인류 역사상 처음으로 전염병에 의한 사망자가 고령으로 인한 사망자보다 적었고, 기아로 숨진 사람이 비만으로 인한 사망자보다 적었으며, 폭력에 의한 사망자가 사고로 인한 사망자보다 적었다.> 그 땐 이 대목이 제게 큰 울림으로 다가왔었는데, 그로부터 일년 사이에 우리들이 경험한 21세기의 한 해는 유발 하라리의 생각도 미처 닿지 못한 시간들이었답니다.
따지고 보면 인류 역사상 COVID는 사람들이 처음 겪어보는 현상일겝니다. 이 독특한 한 해를 잘 견디어 낸 지난 한 해에 대해 감사의 마음을 품어 본답니다.
유발 하라리의 글을 적은 지난 해 일기의 마지막에 제가 남겨놓은 생각이랍니다. <더불어 함께 해야 하는 가족들과 , 만나서 좋은 벗들과, 누구나가 마주칠 수 있는 재해 앞에서 겸손할 수 있는 이웃들과 함께 할 수 있는 오늘 내가 숨쉬는 세상은 여전히 살 만한 축복 아닐까?>
새 봄 , 나아가 다가오는 한 해 내내 당신과 제 세탁소에 드나드는 모든 손님들 나아가 이웃들 모두에게 세상이 살 만한 축복들이 이어지기를 비는 마음으로.
당신의 세탁소에서
It is March now, though we can still see the un-melted lingering snow in the shade. Soon, new green lives will sprout everywhere.
Around this time every year, I always bring to my mind Henry David Thoreau’s words: “… the snow melts before its (poor-house) door as early in the spring. I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have as cheering thoughts, as in a palace.”
Yesterday, I received an e-mail from the Delaware Division of Public Health. It was about the COVID vaccination. Though I signed up for vaccination, it explained in detail why I had to wait, including the limited supply of vaccine and the progress of vaccination in Delaware.
So far, 123,000 seniors, 65 and over, have signed up for the waiting list, and about 51,000 have been vaccinated. Though the doses which they received have increased somewhat, they said that they haven’t been able to make progress more quickly because of the still limited supply and the obligation to provide second doses to those who received their first dose a month or so ago.
Among the reasons for delaying my turn, I nodded in agreement to this: “part of the reason is because some of your friends and neighbors may be more at-risk for COVID than you are.”
Then, I happened to skim through my diary which I had written around this time last year. It was the time when we had lived normal daily lives without knowing about the virus around us and when people with facial masks looked weird.
From the book, “21 lessons for the 21st Century,” written by Yuval Noah Harari, which I was reading around that time, I wrote down a phrase in my diary: “For the first time in history, more people die today from eating too much than from eating too little; more people die from old age than from infectious diseases; and more people commit suicide than are killed by soldiers, terrorists and criminals combined.”
At that time, it touched me so deeply. During the time since then, one year in the 21st century which we have just gone through seems to be the one which even Harari’s thoughts and insights couldn’t reach.
When boiled down to cold facts, COVID may be the first global phenomenon which humans have never experienced before. I’m trying to hold gratitude for persevering through the past unique year.
On the day when I wrote down Harari’s words in the diary, I also left my brief thought: “The world in which I’m breathing today while I am with my family with whom I live together, friends who are good to see, and neighbors who are humble in front of the disaster which anybody may confront – Isn’t it still a blessing?”
I pray and wish that you, all my customers, and neighbors will continue to be blessed in this spring and all the year round.
