만일 “당신의 취미는 무엇입니까?”라는 질문을 받을 때 무어라고 대답하시는지요? ‘내 취미가 뭐지?’라는 생각없이 바로 튀어 나오는 답이 있으신지요? 저 스스로에게 “내 취미가 뭐지?”라고 묻고는 한참을 생각해 보아도 떠오르는 대답이 없기에 물어보는 말이랍니다.
솔직히 저는 이렇다할 취미가 없답니다. Wikipedia는 취미를 이렇게 정의하고 있더군요. A hobby is a regular activity that is done for enjoyment, typically during one’s leisure time. 여가 시간에 즐기는 정기적인 활동 이라는 정의에 맞게 제가 하는 일이란 잠자는 일 밖에는 없겠다는 생각이 들 정도랍니다. 하루 중 대부분의 시간을 세탁소에서 보내고 집으로 돌아가면 저녁을 먹고 특별히 무언가를 할 여유없이 잠자리에 들곤 하기 때문입니다. 그나마 잠자리에서 잠 들기 전에 몇 줄씩이라도 읽곤 하는 책 읽기 정도가 취미라면 취미하고 할 정도랍니다.
올해초에 나도 취미 활동을 해보자는 생각으로 사진기를 하나 장만했답니다. 사진 찍기 초보자들을 위한 카메라라는 설명에 솔깃해서 구입한 카메라랍니다. 평생 해보지 않던 일이라 배울 것이 참 많았답니다.
사진을 찍기 위해 특별히 어딘가를 찾아 가지는 않는답니다. 그저 세탁소와 집 근처 제 일상적인 삶에서 볼 수 있는 것들을 카메라에 담아본답니다. 하늘, 나무, 새, 오리 등등을 찍고 있는데 평소에 눈에 뜨이지 않던 많은 것들이 새롭게 보인답니다. 하늘만 하여도 매일 매일이 다르고 일을 나올 때와 일을 마치고 돌아갈 때가 다릅니다. 물론 그걸 다 카메라에 담지를 못한답니다.
이즈음 카메라를 들고 다니며 제가 느낀 생각 하나랍니다. “내가 보고 느끼고 깨닫는 세상은 정말 작고 작은 세상일 뿐”이라는 것입니다.
When you are asked, “What is your hobby?” what would be your answer? Do you have an answer which you can give instantly without asking yourself the same question? For me, nothing came to my mind, however hard I’d tried to find an answer after I’d asked the question to myself. That’s why I ask you the question.
Frankly, I’ve got no hobbies to speak of. Wikipedia defines “a hobby” this way: “A hobby is a regular activity that is done for enjoyment, typically during one’s leisure time.” I almost thought that my hobby must be sleeping, if I looked back at my activities through Wikipedia’s definition. That’s because I go to bed without doing anything special. I don’t feel any time and energy left for doing some other things after I spent most of my time at the cleaners, returned home and ate dinner. If I really had to say my hobby, I might have said that my hobby was reading, as I read a book just before going to bed every night, even if I read only a few paragraphs at a time.
Earlier this year, I bought a camera with the thought that I’d make photography be my hobby. I got it as I was tempted by the explanation that it was excellent for photography novices. As it was something that I had never actually done, there were lots of things that I had to learn.
I don’t go to any places especially to take pictures. I try to capture things which I can find around my house and cleaners and in my everyday life. While I’m taking pictures of the sky, trees, geese and so on, I can see many things that I don’t think I’ve seen usually. The sky looks different every day and the sky when I come to the cleaners in the morning doesn’t look the same when I leave the cleaners in the early evening. Of course, I cannot capture all of them with my camera.
While I was carrying a camera recently, one thought which came to my mind was: the world in which I see, feel and realize is really nothing but a really small world.
