‘리디아의 왕을 섬기던 목동 기게스(Gyges)는 어느 날 지진으로 갈라진 땅 틈에서 발견한 반지를 끼고 투명인간이 될 수 있다는 사실을 알게 됐다. 평소에는 남의 눈을 의식해 상상하지도 못했던 일을 할 수 있게 된 그는 왕궁에 들어가 왕비를 유혹해 간통하고, 왕을 죽인 뒤 자신이 왕에 올랐다.’
철학자 플라톤의 저서 《국가》에 나오는 가공의 마법 반지, 바로 기게스의 반지(Ring of Gyges)이야기다.
소크라테스의 제자였던 글라우콘은 이 이야기를 하며 스승에게 물었다. “이런 반지가 두 개 있어서 하나는 도덕적인 사람에게 주고 다른 하나는 그렇지 못한 사람에게 준다면 어떻게 될까요?” 스승에게 이 질문을 던졌던 글라우콘은 기게스의 반지(Ring of Gyges)를 가진 사람이라면 누구라도 제 욕심만으로 가득찬 삶을 살 것이라는 예단이 있었다.
2017년 내가 뉴스로 접하는 세상들은 마치 기게스의 반지를 끼고 자기 욕망으로만 사는 사람들로 넘쳐나는 듯 하다. 글라우콘의 의심이 결코 예단이 아니라 이른바 진실이 아닐까하는 믿음이 들 정도이다.
신에 대한 나의 믿음조차 흔들리는 순간, ‘그게 아니다’라고 소리치며 내게 다가오는 사람들이 있다. 뱃사람들을 위해 예수선교를 하는 Philadelphia 에 있는 Seamen’s Church의 David Reid 목사도 그 중 하나이다.
기게스의 반지(Ring of Gyges)가 이끄는 유혹에 눈길조차 건네지 않는 사람들이 만들어 가는 세상, 바로 신에 대한 믿음으로 살아가는 사람들이 만드는 세상이다. 어쩜 그것은 진실로 사람에 대한 믿음으로 살아가는 사람들이 만들어 나가는 세상일게다.

*** 이 사건은 대한민국 역사상 최악의 해양재난이었으며, 대한민국 전국적으로 큰 충격을 주었으며, 완전한 조사 요구에 대해 전세계적인 지지를 받고 있다. MIT 대학원에 재학 중인 한국학생 권이석이 행한 독립적 분석에 따르면, 2000년 James Reason이 발표한 “스위스 치즈 파라다임(Swiss Cheese paradigm)”의 전형적인 모습으로, 안전장벽이 구조적 결함이 있었다고 합니다.

On Sunday April 16th, at the Seamen’s Church Institute Chapel in Philadelphia, I will be leading a service of remembrance for the 304 people who lost their lives three years ago when the Korean ferry “Sewol-Ho ” sank off the coast of Korea. 270 high school students died that morning, they were on a school field trip. I am working with the Korean-American community and the Philadelphia People in Solidarity with the Families of Sewol Ferry (Philadelphia SESAMO) group on the order of service that will be held on Easter Sunday afternoon at the Seamen’s church chapel. We will have a special music presentation by three Korean high school students from Fort Lee, New Jersey, who play traditional Korean drums. *** This was the worst maritime disaster that South Korea has ever experienced and it sent shock waves through the nation, there is now a worldwide community of support calling for a full inquiry. Independent analysis done by a Korean graduate student Yisug Kwon at MIT has already shown that there was a systemic failure of safety barriers, the classic “Swiss Cheese paradigm” that James Reason wrote about in 2000.
