어제 내린 눈이 뜰을 하얗게 덮었다. 주일아침의 적막함은 내가 누리는 소소한 즐거움 가운데 하나이다. 뒷뜰 눈밭에 소리없이 내려앉은 아침햇살은 적막함에 푸근함을 더한다.
시집 하나 손에 든다. “내 가슴에 매화 한그루 심어놓고”
얼핏 춥고 시리게만 보이는 세상을 향해 은은한 매화 향기 전하는 아름다운 사람들을 생각하며 편지 한 장 쓴다.
새해가 되면 이따금 이런 질문을 던지는 손님들이 계시답니다. 올해 음력설은 언제냐?라는 물음입니다. 올해는 1월 28일이 Chinese New Year로 잘 알려진 음력설이랍니다.
잘 아시다시피 중국을 비롯한 인근 동양국가들은 오래 전부터 음력 달력을 사용했답니다. 그런데 이 음력달력은 태양의 움직임에 깊게 영향을 받는 농사꾼들에게 불편한 점이 많았답니다. 그래서 사용한 것이 24절기라는 것입니다. 일년을 24절기로 나눈 것인데 이 절기는 우리들이 사용하는 태양력에 맞춘 것이랍니다.
24절기 가운데 태양력으로 제일 첫번 째 절기는 소한(小寒)입니다. 지난 1월 5일(목)이 소한이었답니다. 소한이라는 말은 ‘조금 추운 날’이라는 뜻이지만, 실제 한국에서는 일년 중 가장 추운 날이라는 뜻으로 사용된답니다. 실제 아주 춥기도 하고요.
일년 중 가장 추운 날이라는 소한 무렵에 피는 꽃이 있답니다. 매화입니다. 중국이나 한국에는 이 매화에 대한 시들이 넘쳐나게 많답니다. (이즈음 사람들에겐 잊혀진 많은 것들 가운데 하나이지만 말입니다. 이즈음엔 사계절이나 24절기와는 아무 상관없이 꽃들이 피고 지는 세상이 되었으니 옛사람들이 매화를 얼마나 사랑했는지 모르는게 당연할 수도 있겠지요.)
옛 한국인들이 매화를 노래한 시만 모아서 펴낸 시집이 제게 있답니다. 시집의 제목은 “내 가슴에 매화 한그루 심어놓고”인데, 시집에 실린 시들을 읽다보면 왜 옛사람들이 매화를 좋아했는지를 잘 알 수 있답니다.
혹시라도 지금 어렵고 힘든 시간을 보내는 처지에 있다면, 삭막하고 어둡고 추운 한겨울에 피는 매화를 보며 힘을 내고, 이제 곧 모든 세상이 활짝 필 봄을 준비하라는 뜻으로 매화를 바라본 것이랍니다.
2017년 1월의 두번 째 일요일 아침에 제가 읽은 매화 시 한편을 당신과 함께 나눕니다.
당신의 세탁소에서
온갖 꽃 중 매화만 눈 속에서 피어나서
그윽한 향기 마치 내 마음을 안다는 듯
달빛 아래 홀로 있어도 네(매화)가 있으니 행복하여라
Around this time of year, some customers occasionally ask me a question. It is “when is the lunar New Year’s day this year?” This year, January 28 is the day, which is well known as Chinese New Year’s day.
As you know well, the lunar calendar has been used since a long time ago in China and other countries in the Orient. But, it gave many inconveniences to farmers who had to farm according to the motion of the sun. So, the twenty-four seasonal divisions (or solar terms) were devised. As the term indicates, they divided a year into twenty-four terms, reflecting the motion of the sun. In a sense, they were the way to adjust the lunar calendar to the solar calendar.
The first of the 24 divisions is ‘Sohan (소한, 小寒).’ January 5 (Thursday) was that day this year. Though the word ‘Sohan’ means ‘somewhat cold day,’ in reality, it is regarded ‘the coldest day of year’ in Korea. It is usually very cold on the day.
There is a flower which blooms around ‘Sohan,’ the coldest day of year. It is a Plum blossom. There are numerous poems about a Plum blossom in China and Korea. (Unfortunately, it has become just one of so many things that people in these days have forgotten. As flowers bloom and fall regardless of seasonal divisions, nowadays, it may be no wonder that people don’t know how much people in the old days loved a Plum blossom.)
I have a collection of poems which Koreans in the old days wrote about a Plum blossom. Its title is “After I plant a plum tree in my heart (내 가슴에 매화 한그루 심어놓고).” If you read the poems in the book, you will understand why people in the old days loved a Plum blossom.
They looked at a Plum blossom and heard the message: if you are in difficult and adverse circumstances, get strength by looking at Plum blossoms which bloom in desolate, dark, and cold winter, and prepare for the not-too-distant spring in which all the world will burst into bloom.
I would like to share with you a few lines of a poem on a Plum bloom this second Sunday morning of January 2017.

Only a Plum bloom of all flowers blossoms in the snow,
As if its sweet scent knew my mind,
I am happy, though I am alone under the moonlight, because you (a Plum bloom) are here.
