며칠 전에 오마이뉴스에 <아! 이게 바로 ‘핑크빛 천지개벽’>이라는 제목의 기사가 실렸었습니다. 대구 비슬산을 분홍빛으로 바꾸어 놓은 진달래천지를 소개한 기사였습니다.(기사보기)

While I was reading the on-line edition of a Korean newspaper the other day, one picture captured my attention, and made me look at it for a while. It was this picture which showed the pink colored mountain with flowers.
The flowers which changed the color of the mountain into pink are azaleas. In April every year, the flowers can be commonly seen anywhere in the Korean peninsula. They automatically remind me of my hometown where I grew up.
In Korea, it has another name, “Cham-ggot (참꽃),” in addition to an azalea. Its meaning is a “real flower.” Did you say that if there is a “real flower,” there must be a “fake flower”? You are right. There is a “fake flower,” too. They are royal azaleas (Rhododendron schlippenbachii), the name of which are “Chul-zzook (철쭉)” in Korea.
At first glance, azaleas seem to look the same as royal azaleas. However, azaleas are edible, but royal azaleas are not. Korea people make cakes and wines with azalea flowers. The pictures below are those cakes and wines.
Isn’t it interesting that people in the old days set the edibility as the criteria between “real” and “fake”?
The appearance of the pink-colored mountain seems to have not changed at all from the sight which I saw in my youth, even though a countless number of things have changed since I left Korea. That was the reason why I looked at the picture for long.
As I fell into the thoughts about ‘things changed’ and ‘things unchanged,’ my mind moved into thoughts about ‘things that should not have changed, but changed’ and ‘things that should have changed, but have not changed.’
It is the last week of April and the feeling of spring pervades every corner around us.

며칠 전 한국에서 발행되는 온라인 신문을 보다가 사진 한장에 사로잡혀 한참을 쳐다보고 있었답니다. 온통 분홍색으로 변한 산을 담은 바로 이 사진이랍니다.
산을 분홍빛으로 바꾸어 놓은 이 꽃 이름은 진달래랍니다. 해마다 4월이면 한반도 어느 곳에서나 아주 흔히 볼 수 있는 꽃이랍니다. 제가 자랐던 고향 생각을 절로 나게 하는 꽃이랍니다.
한국에서는 이 꽃을 진달래라는 이름 말고도 참꽃 이라고도 부른답니다. “진짜 꽃”이라는 뜻이랍니다. ‘진짜 꽃’이 있으면 ‘가짜 꽃’도 있겠다고요? 그렇답니다. 가짜 꽃도 있답니다. 바로 royal azalea(Rhododendron schlippenbachii)인데 철쭉이라고 부르는 꽃입니다.
철쭉과 진달래는 얼핏 보면 비슷하게 생겼답니다. 그런데 진달래는 사람들이 먹는 꽃이고, 철쭉은 먹지 못하는 꽃이랍니다. 한국인들은 진달래꽃으로 떡을 만들어 먹기도 하고, 술을 담아 먹기도 한답니다. 사진은 바로 진달래꽃으로 만든 떡과 술이랍니다.
진짜와 가짜를 구분하는 기준을 먹을 수 있느냐, 없느냐에 둔 옛날 사람들의 생각이 재미있지 않는지요?
온통 분홍빛으로 변한 모습은 예전에 제 어린 시절과 전혀 변함이 없었답니다. 제가 한국에서 살았을 때와 지금 사이에 변한 것들은 셀 수 없을 정도로 많은데 말입니다. 그래서 한참동안 사진을 들어다보게 되었답니다.
‘변한 것들’과 ‘변하지 않은 것들’에 대한 생각에 빠져들다보니, ‘변해야 좋은데 변하지 않은 것들’과 ‘변하지 말아야 하는데 변한 것들’에 대한 생각으로 이어졌답니다.
온천지에 봄기운이 가득한 4월의 마지막 주간입니다.
변해서 좋은 것들과 변하지 않아서 좋은 것들로 충만한 한주간이 되시길 빕니다.
