대통령 선거를 앞두고 아시안-아메리칸들의 표를 결집시켜 권리신장을 도모하기 위해, 아시안-아메리칸 정치참여단체인 <80-20>가 참여를 독려하는 메시지입니다. 번역하여 소개드립니다.

비단 미국에 사는 소수계 이민집단에게만 해당되는 이야기가 아닙니다. 어디에 살건 “시민”으로 살아가는 권리입니다.
하려고만 한다면, 하기 매우 쉽다.
아시안계가 기회 균등을 획득하는 3가지 쉬운 방법
(1) 미국에서 “정치적”이란 무엇인지 이해하기
미국에서는, 당파적 선거에 참여하는 것이 ‘정치적’ 인 것이다. 비영리 단체는 거기에 관여하는 것이 허용되지 않는다. 관여하면, 비영리 자격을 박탈당한다. 입법과정에 로비하는 것은 정치적인 것으로 고려될 수 있지만, 항상 그렇지만은 않다.
그에 반해서, 정부 혹은 정부 관리와 연관된 이슈에 대해 어떤 입장을 취하는 것은 전혀 ‘정치적’인 것이 아니다. 그것은 시민과 미국 정부간의 대화에 불과할 뿐이다. 심지어 우리가 정부나 정부 관리를 부당하게 비판했을 때라도, 고의로 그리고 악의로 그릇된 정보를 밀어부치지 않는 한, 제 1차 헌법개정인 언론의 자유 규정에 의해 보호받는다.
미국에서 ‘정치적’ 이란 것의 정의를 이해하지 못하는 아시안계 박사, 교수, 중국인 교장과 교사, 전문가 조직 단체장, 기타 비영리 단체들이 매우 많다. 그들은 잘못 알고 있어서, 법무부가 시행한 중국계 미국인에 대한 명백한 프로화일링에 대한 자신의 견해 표명을 자제하였다.
그들은 틀렸다!!!!
우리의 권리를 위해 싸우는 우리 커뮤니티를 위한 강력한 지식인의 목소리가 되기보다는, 무지때문에 그들은 침묵했다. 그것이 바로 “’정치적’의 의미를 아는 것”이 우리 자신을 강력하게 만드는 3가지 쉬운 방법의 첫번째인 이유이다.
(2) 너무 소심하지 마라.
우리의 일시적이고 사소한 득실 대신에 우리 자녀들의 미래에 대해 보다 더 생각하라.
(3) 우리에게 선거가 중요하다는 것을 이해하고, 그것을 이용하라.
표를 구하는 후보자들이 공약을 내세울 것을 미국 정당은 권장한다. 종국적으로, 사람들이 무엇을 원하는지 알아내는 것이 선거를 하는 한 가지 중요한 이유이다. 그래서, 모든 선거, 특히 대통령 선거는 아시안계 미국인들에게는 현재 우리의 불평등한 위치를 조금씩 개선시킬 수 있는 절호의 기회이다.
어떻게 약속을 얻어내는가? 정치인이 선거에 승리한 후에 우리에게 한 약속을 이행하게 만드는 방법이 무엇인가? 아주 복잡하다. 운좋게 우리의 정당한 이해를 위해 헌신하는 전문가 단체가 있다면, 그들에게 맡기는 것이 최선이다.
요컨대, 부동 집단 투표(swing bloc vote)가 공약을 얻어내는 최고의 유인책이다. 그 이유는 그것이 후보자를 가장 진하게 보상하거나 가장 심하게 벌주기 때문이다. 그것이 80-20가 양대 정당이 우리의 이해를 놓고 경쟁하게 유인하기 위하여 언제나 부동 집단 투표를 지지하는 이유이다.
어떤 질문을 할 지 누가 알겠는가? 누가 “부동 집단 투표(swing bloc vote)”를 전달해줄 수 있는가? 곰곰 생각해보라. 80-20 말고, 그 누가 능력과 경험을 갖추고 있는가?

3 easy ways for AsAms to win equal opportunity
(1) Understanding what is “political” in the U.S.
In the U.S., taking a part in partisan elections is political. Non-profit organizations are not permitted to engaged in it. Otherwise their non-profit status will be taken away. Lobbying in the legislative process could be considered as political but not always.
In contrast, taking a position on an issue which involves government or government officials is NOT AT ALL political. It is just conversations between citizens and the US government. Even when we have criticized the government or officials wrongly, we are protected by the 1st amendment, freedom of speech, unless we knowingly and maliciously push the wrong information.
There are so many AsAms Ph.Ds, professors, Chinese school principals and teachers, heads of professional organizations, and other nonprofit orgs. who don’t understand the U.S definition of political. They refrained themselves from expressing their view on the apparent profiling of Chinese Ams by the Dept. of Justice, because of their mis-understanding.
THEY ARE SO WRONG!!!!
Instead of being a powerful educated voice for our community to fight for our rights, they silenced themselves because of their ignorance. That is why “knowing the meaning of political” is the 1st of the 3 EASY WAYS to strengthen ourselves.
(2) Be less timid.
Think more for our children’s future instead of our temporary & small gains and losses.
(3) Understand the importance of elections to us, and make use of them.
Candidates seeking votes are encouraged by US political parties to make promises. After all, finding out what people want is one important reason of holding elections. Hence, every election, especially the presidential elections, is AsAms’ golden opportunity to chip away at our current UN-equal status.
How to get the promises? How to get the politicians to fulfill the promises to us after they are elected? Very complicated. Best leave it to the professionals, IF we are lucky enough to have such a group who are dedicated to our rightful interests.
In essence, A swing bloc vote is the best inducement to get the promises, because it rewards the candidates most richly or punishes them the most severely. That is who 80-20 has always advocated a swing bloc vote in order to induce both major political parties to complete to serve our interests.
Who knows what questions to ask? Who can deliver a “swing bloc vote”? Search your mind. Who else but 80-20 has the ability & experience?
